It was the early 1980s when scientists recognized the first cases of AIDS in the United States. I lost some friends to the disease, and if you are old enough to remember, then perhaps you did too. In 1995, a Fort Lauderdale chemist by the name of Richard Campbell Zahn died from complications from AIDS. The proceeds from the sale of his company -- which made a lip balm for the treatment of cold sores and fever blisters -- were used to start The Campbell Foundation. This year, the Fort Lauderdale-based foundation celebrates 20 years of funding innovative research into finding a cure for HIV/AIDS. One of the greatest challenges for researchers has been trying to find a way for medications that treat the disease to cross the blood-brain barrier. HIV meds need to cross the blood-brain barrier if they are to fight viral reservoirs in the central nervous system and brain as well as alleviate HIV-related neurological issues. These symptoms include dementia and neuropathy in addition to psychological conditions such as depression. The foundation has twice funded researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel where they are making great strides in the battle. POZ wrote about its latest grant and what it means to the battle against this deadly disease.

Divorce is never easy, especially when kids are involved. But what happens when a couple starts and grows a business together and then grows apart? According to the U.S. Census Bureau 3.7 million businesses are owned by husbands and wives. Client Lori Barkus, a Weston-based family law attorney talked to Mainstreet reporter S.Z. Berg about the challenges these couples face when divorce is on the horizon. Her advice: "A well-drafted prenuptial agreement can help to avoid many problems that can arise. You also should consider a shareholder agreement. Such documents can help to avoid lengthy court battles, which, in many cases, can bankrupt a company, leaving both parties with nothing." In the past, when I have approached clients about using Pinterest for their business, I usually heard the same question: “Isn’t Pinterest for people looking for a new recipe, children’s craft ideas or cute animal pictures?” Well, after using Pinterest for one of my law firm clients, I am here to tell you Pinterest can be a powerful marketing tool even for a business that you would not think was particularly visual. It’s simply up to the “pinner” to make the message they want to get across visually interesting. In the case of my law firm client, we use free (meaning no royalty or financial cost) art that is tied to the firm’s blog. The response has been phenomenal. In fact, the posts are getting hundreds of eyeballs a month and many re-pins. Best of all, often you can simply repurpose content – in my client’s case we pin blogs. After a quick search of Pinterest, I found some companies that you might not think were good fits. For example, I found a personal injury law firm with boards on medical malpractice, car accidents and birth-related injuries. I found an accounting firm with boards on refunds and filing tax returns. And, I found a nonprofit organization that posts information on the services they offer, the fundraisers they host and even simple tips on healthy living. |
