What happens to a family business when couples divorce?

Divorce
Divorce is never easy, especially when kids are involved. But what happens when a couple starts and grows a business together and then grows apart? According to the U.S. Census Bureau 3.7 million businesses are owned by husbands and wives. Client Lori Barkus, a Weston-based family law attorney talked to Mainstreet reporter S.Z. Berg about the challenges these couples face when divorce is on the horizon.

Her advice:
"A well-drafted prenuptial agreement can help to avoid many problems that can arise. You also should consider a shareholder agreement. Such documents can help to avoid lengthy court battles, which, in many cases, can bankrupt a company, leaving both parties with nothing."
